Before going to the Canal, you should check the schedule when ships will come through on their website. Usually there are no ship crossing during mid-day. Ticket needs to be purchased in order to view the passing by ship on the stand. I was able to witness the ship going through the Canal first hand. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The process of a ship crossing took about an hour.
